Erik left the Guildhall late in the evening, stepping into artificial twilight with the dome’s lighting lowered to create a day/night pattern. He had spent several hours closeted with the President of the Guild, some of it talking with his crew over an encrypted connection to the control room on the Vagabond. The plan was outlined, and each of them enthusiastically agreed to accept a role. Even Fynn, who had grumbled about having to leave the work on the hull for the duration of the conference.

Standing next to a small stretch of real grass on the open square, Erik breathed in the smells of the dome. He still felt angry and frustrated about what had been happening the last few months, but now that he was finally doing something constructive he also felt hopeful and impatient to begin. He kept reminding himself it was only three days of waiting before they could depart and begin their role in Meyers’ plan.

“I like this time of day best. It’s always so quiet and peaceful.” Dex stepped up beside him, looking over the darkened square and the closed shops that surrounded it. Windows above the shops were lit with soft light, and the sounds of music and laughter could be heard from several places. Light and noise came from down a street on the far side of the square, a restaurant entertaining the late crowd.

“Absolutely beautiful,” Erik agreed, his eyes on her face. “How are you doing, Dex?”

She turned amber eyes to meet his, a small smile on her lips. “I’m doing better now that I can stop worrying about you for a while. I’m glad to see you again, Erik.”

Steeling himself, he wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her close in a hug. Dex laid her head on his shoulder, sliding an arm around his back. “I suppose it’s too late to get that drink?” he asked.

“It’s never too late. The Houston Eagle is open,” she replied, pointing to the lights down the street. They started to stroll along the edge of the square, staying close. Erik could feel a lump in his throat, nerves almost overwhelming him. After four years of being unable to work up the courage, he was finally getting to spend time with Dex outside the Guildhall.

“I always wondered when you were going to ask me,” she said, interrupting his thoughts.

“What? Was I that transparent?”

Chuckling, her arm around his back squeezed tightly. “Erik, you had the biggest puppy dog eyes I’ve ever seen the first time we met. I knew then that you were trying to work up the nerve to ask me out.”

“Heh. I guess I tend to wear my emotions on my sleeve. You can’t blame a guy for wanting to spend time with a beautiful woman, though. Especially when he discovers she’s also smart and has a wonderfully sarcastic sense of humor.”

“Keep talking like that, mister, and you might get more than one drink out of this.” She reached across to poke him in the side, eliciting a jerk and laugh as she hit a ticklish spot.
